|
|
So here we go, mobifindit! beta 2 is available for general consumption. Here are the basic things to know:
IMPORTANT: Please uninstall the previous beta before installing this version
Supported handsets
Symbian Series 60 Second edition and more specifically:
- Nokia 3230, 3250, 6600, 6620, 7610, 6630, 6670, 6680, 6681, 6682, 6260, N70, N72
- Panasonic x700, x800
- Samsung SGH-D7230, SGH-D730, SGH-Z600
We are looking to extend the reach to series 60 3rd edition (latest Nokia handsets) and Windows mobile in the coming months.
How it works
This small demo shows a part of it:
There are 2 easy steps to get started:
1. Install mobilfindit! from http://www.mobease.com/dl/dl.php.
2. Begin typing things you're interested in natural language.
Examples:
- To find a contact named John Travis: Just type "564"
- To create a new SMS: Just type "767"
- To SMS a specfic friend named Peter: Just type "738" and scoll to the "Peter entry" the use the nav pad right key to display an envelope and click it. Your SMS is ready to be written.
- To listen to an mp3 named Hang-up: Just type "426" and click the desired result
What works
The search works on the following elements:
- Contact names
- Contact phone numbers
- Bookmarks
- Applications
- Audio file names (mp3s & wav)
The following actions work:
- Phoning a contact!
- Sending an SMS to a contact
- Sending an email to a contact
- Launching an application
- Launching a music file
- Launching an audio file
- Launching a video file
- Launching an image file
- Launching a bookmark
- SMS keyword
- MMS keyword
- EMAIL keyword
- Photo keyword on some handset (7610 but not on the N70)
Super distribution
mobifindit! includes a handy way that allows anybody to send it to a friend either via bluetooth, email or infrared.
Background update
The database containing all searchable elements is updated every 4 hours automatically and in background.
It can be updated manually via the Options>Refresh data entry.
Automatic start
When the handsets starts, mobifindit! is automatically launched.
Update
New version can be optained by simply choosing the Options>Update mobifindit! entry.
Bugs & limitations
- The indexing process can take several minutes with handsets that have thousands of content (it takes around 1.5 min on a N70 with 500 contacts & 200 multimedia files)
- Phone number search works currently for main mobile & land line only
- There's currently a 20 characters limitation for mp3 file names
- Sending an email to a contact
- The application name currently returns the xxx.app value, so it will return "TTmobile" for TomTom for instance
- Huge contacts DBs combined with big music collections will result in a slowed down user interface
- depending on the installed Opera version, bookmarks may or may not be supported

|
|
Hi guys,
I downloaded MobiFindIt yesterday on my Nokia 6600 and played a bit with it. I have a few comments regarding this version.
First of I like the idea of the application and I am very much inclined in using it so the following comments are really about improving it and not criticism.
Here I go...
Issues
- Screen not refreshed after about box: Type somthing in the edit box to get some items in the list below. Go into the about box through the menu and display the about box. When the about box dismisses the list is not fully refreshed.
- The items in the list are not kept after an action has been taken. Select a contact in the list and send him/her a SMS. The sms editor opens. Cancel and come back to the application. The list is no longer there so this prevents one to effectively call that same person instead of sending a SMS. Very handy
Improvements
- Limit the number of results searched and displayed. For example if I search for a friend called Natalia. I will type 628. The same number will give me the following results:
Natalia
Maude
Mathias
Nathalie
Natanael
Maureen
Matthieu
So what would really help is asking the user what he wants: NAT, MAU, MAT. From there you can limit the results to
Natalia
Nathalie
Natanael
I know you can do this by entering another key to limit the options but that requires the user to enter more stuff and the app will still search a lot.
- User interface. I found the current interface interesting but lacking simplicity and user friendliness. First the tabs take too much screen real estate. They could be effectively located in the status bar at the top like they ususally are under Series60.
Also when selecting a contact the actions available are accessed by using the left and right keys. Cycling throught a number of action can be cumbersome. Instead when clicking on the contact a context menu could be opened with the list of action you can do on it a bit like in the address book.
Generally speaking I find that user interface that follow the platform standard make people get into an application more easily and they will use it more.
Anyway keep on the good work, I'm looking forward to a next release.

Dear Greg, thanks a lot for your valuable feedback.
Here are below some answers.

Agreed, on the fix list.

The fact that we are blanking the search is intentional.
Except from testing, there are few chances that you first send an sms to somebody then in the following seconds phone him. The contrary is however more likely.
An other reason is that when you begin to type things in mobifindit! then have to do something else (like receiving a call for instance), you don't want to have to erase all the characters that you had previously typed.
But since there are pros & cons, this point will be under observation (and maybe result in a setting).

On this one, changing the behaviour would add additional clicks & may result in more "work" to get to what you want in the end.

You are right on most of the points and we are considering a revamp (already) of the UI to make it rely more on standards.
On symbian, this gives us a serious issue since symbian series 60 lists don't support highlighting, underligning or changing color of the part of a text.
So what we are considering as a replacement is to place the matches between [].
Second point is that the tabs would be gone and replaced by a cycling of the icons in the "search & dial" box.
Here is what it looks like:
Feedback welcome

OK then...
You probably already know about that one but here I go. MobiFindIt will not find a contact that has no name e.g. a company.
I have a few contacts in my address book that are companies and therefore the fields firstname and surnames are empty.

Hi, thanks for the feedback.
We know about the Company only issue and will be working on it in future releases.
This place is fine for now since the number of posts is still small. |
